An innovative solution

The customer manufactures different products that are grouped into packages of 6, 8, 10 or 20 units, which are palletized using several operators. The challenge is to create an automatic palletizing installation, capable of accepting two products from different manufacturing lines, with individual customization of mosaics optimizing the use of the media.

A solution was designed with a forming robot, for each line, of the different layers of the pallet, with a single handling gripper for all formats. Once the layer has been formed, a single robot equipped with a multifunction handling gripper picks up the formed layer and deposits it on the corresponding pallet.

The multifunction gripper can manipulate the layer using a shutter system, handles empty pallets and manages interleaver cartons. Layers are placed until the pallet is completed with the programmed configuration, the entire pallet goes to a stretch wrapper, the automatic labeling is generated and it leaves the cell completely finished.

The biggest challenge

The challenge of a solution that would adapt to the volume of production and product variability has already been achieved, but then we set ourselves one more. The generation of mosaics and the management of the cell, already installed, requires our customers to have properly trained maintenance and production personnel, resources that are not always available in the labor market and that we cannot always attract to our companies for different reasons.

Therefore, we decided to tackle the following challenge: to develop a tool that allows the programming of robot mosaics by an operator with basic training.

Machine Vision Camera

There are collaborative robots in which the operator holds the tool and brings it to a certain position, which is recorded to generate a program. But this solution is not valid for certain applications that require conventional industrial robots.

Once the problem is identified, the solution allows for a simple programming environment, which eliminates a significant barrier to access to this technology. The project consists of an artificial vision camera with artificial intelligence algorithms, which is located above the palletizing position. The operator places boxes in a sequence and position, which the camera records.

Easy programming

At the end of the system, it interprets the layer configuration and automatically generates the robot’s program code. If there are different layers, the operator must place all of them. The system is informed of the number of layers to be palletized and the program is complete. In a production environment in which the demands demand agile and low-cost adaptations, any company with a flexible palletizing system – which has the layer programming system described – will be able to make new mosaics or modifications to existing ones quickly, at a low cost and – above all – autonomously.
